Schluter Kitchen Remodeling: The Fresno Owner’s Guide
A Schluter kitchen remodel in Fresno typically runs $14,000 to $45,000 installed, depending on the size of the kitchen and how much Schluter waterproofing and uncoupling membrane the layout calls for. We stock Schluter KERDI, DITRA, and DITRA-HEAT components for kitchen floors and backsplashes, and our crew installs them regularly across Fresno, Clovis, and the Tower District. Most Fresno owners discover they need us when a tile floor has cracked along a seam, a backsplash has begun pulling away from the wall, or water has found its way under old tile and into the subfloor. You notice the cracked grout first. Then you notice the tile moving underfoot. What failed underneath is usually the wrong underlayment for a concrete slab that shifts with Fresno’s hot summers and wet winters.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To
We work with the full Schluter line for kitchens: KERDI-BOARD for backsplash substrates, DITRA and DITRA-XL for uncoupling floors, DITRA-HEAT for heated tile floors, and KERDI waterproofing membrane wherever a sink, dishwasher, or refrigerator line runs against a wall. The key compatibility check is thickness. DITRA is 1/8 inch thick, DITRA-XL is 5/16 inch, and KERDI-BOARD comes in panels from 3/16 inch up to 2 inches. If your existing tile floor sits flush with adjacent hardwood or vinyl, you want DITRA. If you need to build the tile up to match a thicker finished floor, DITRA-XL does the job. One gotcha we see in Fresno older homes: DITRA needs a modified thinset to bond to plywood subfloor but an unmodified thinset to bond tile to the top of the membrane. Using modified thinset on both sides is the most common cause of tile failure we see in Tower District kitchens built before 1980. For OEM versus aftermarket, we recommend genuine Schluter for any waterproofing layer and DITRA-HEAT cable runs. The Schluter product warranty travels with the finished project, and we can register the installation so the warranty is active, something no generic uncoupling mat offers.

Signs Your Schluter Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Cracked grout lines running in a straight path across the floor. This usually means the subfloor is moving and the tile had no uncoupling layer between it and the slab. In Fresno, clay soil expands and contracts with irrigation and drought cycles, and that movement travels straight up into the tile.
- Hollow-sounding tiles when you tap them with a broom handle. The thinset has lost its bond. Under a tile floor, that often traces back to an incompatible thinset over DITRA, or no DITRA at all.
- Water staining on the cabinet toe-kick or the wall behind the sink. The backsplash was never waterproofed, or the KERDI band at the counter transition failed. Once water gets behind a backsplash, it wicks into drywall and the cabinet box.
- DITRA-HEAT thermostat trips the breaker or a floor section stays cold. The heating cable was damaged during tile installation, or a splice wasn’t sealed inside the KERDI membrane.
- Grout discoloration around the dishwasher or sink base. Water is sitting under the tile and wicking up through the grout. This is a waterproofing issue, not a cleaning issue, and it will get worse every cycle.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A full Schluter kitchen remodel in Fresno runs $14,000 to $45,000. A smaller kitchen with new DITRA under 150 square feet of tile, a KERDI-BOARD backsplash, and no cabinet changes stays in the $14,000 to $20,000 range. A larger kitchen with DITRA-HEAT, new cabinets from KraftMaid or Wellborn, and countertops from Cambria or Silestone will land in the $30,000 to $45,000 range. The written price includes the Schluter membrane or board, thinset, grout, tile, labor, shoe covers, drop cloths, and a photo of the clean-up before the crew leaves. We give you that written number before any work starts, and it doesn’t change once the crew arrives. Every Schluter kitchen project is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right, we make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself. Turn off the DITRA-HEAT thermostat and note which floor zones stop warming. Tap tiles with a broom handle and mark the hollow ones with painter’s tape. Feel along the backsplash for soft drywall or peeling grout. What you shouldn’t do is cut into a KERDI membrane to investigate, pull up tile to look at the subfloor, or touch a DITRA-HEAT cable that’s been exposed. Cutting KERDI incorrectly voids the waterproofing warranty and can send water into the subfloor silently for years. If the tile is cracked, the membrane below is compromised, or the heating cable is damaged, call us at (559) 540-8453 and we’ll assess it properly. Graham Stein has been reading tile failures for twenty-six years, and he still writes every scope of work down before anything comes off the truck.
FAQs

A properly installed DITRA or KERDI system lasts the life of the tile floor, which in a Fresno kitchen is typically 30 to 50 years with normal use. The tile or grout may need attention before the Schluter layer ever does. Call (559) 540-8453 and we’ll tell you honestly whether the Schluter layer is even the problem.
Yes, if the failure is contained to one section, we can cut out the damaged tile and membrane and patch in new DITRA with the proper KERDI band at the seam. The repair keeps the waterproofing continuous and the Schluter warranty intact. Call (559) 540-8453 for an exact quote.
Most Schluter kitchen remodels in Fresno run two to six weeks depending on cabinet lead times with KraftMaid or Wellborn and whether DITRA-HEAT is part of the scope. We give you a project calendar that Graham updates when anything changes, so you’re never guessing when the kitchen comes back online. Call (559) 540-8453 and we’ll map out your timeline.
We stock DITRA, DITRA-XL, KERDI-BAND, and KERDI-BOARD panels on the truck for most kitchen remodels in Fresno, along with the correct thinsets for both sides of the membrane. Specialty items like DITRA-HEAT cable lengths and larger KERDI-BOARD thicknesses get ordered per project with a clear lead time on your written scope. Call (559) 540-8453 and we’ll confirm what’s on the shelf today.
If your Schluter kitchen floor or backsplash has failed, or you want the next remodel built on a waterproofing and uncoupling system that’s specified correctly for Fresno’s soil and summer heat, call (559) 540-8453. We’ll send a background-checked, uniformed crew with shoe covers and drop cloths, give you a written price before any work starts, and leave you with a photo of the clean-up before we go.
