Schluter Driveway & Pavers: The Fresno Owner’s Guide
If you have a Schluter product tied to your driveway or paver project and something has failed, the honest answer is this: we stock Schluter-compatible profiles, edge protections, and transition pieces, and a typical replacement or repair runs between $250 and $2,500 installed in the Fresno market, depending on the part and how much surrounding material needs to come up. We can usually tell you over the phone whether it’s a part we carry or one we need to order, and the written price comes before any work starts. Most Fresno homeowners discover the failure the same way: a driveway edge piece has cracked loose after a few summers of heat, or a paver transition is lifting where the concrete meets the pavers and someone caught a toe on it.
We’re an independent remodeling contractor, not affiliated with Schluter, but we work with their products regularly enough to know which parts fail in this climate and which ones hold up. Graham Stein is the owner here, and he keeps a notebook in his shirt pocket with exactly this kind of detail written down so nothing gets lost between the phone call and the truck pulling up.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To

Schluter’s driveway and paver product line is not as wide as their indoor tile profile catalog, but the compatibility question still trips people up. The main pieces we see in Fresno are Schluter edge-protection profiles (like the SCHLUTER-SCHIENE and SCHLUTER-DECO families) used at paver-to-concrete transitions, and drainage profiles like the SCHLUTER-TROBA line that sit under pavers or along the driveway edge to move water away from the slab. These are not one-size-fits-all parts. A profile that was right for a thin paver will not sit flush against a thicker driveway edge, and the height of the anchoring leg is the measurement that matters most.
When you call us, have two things ready if you can: the length of the failed piece, and a clear look at the profile edge to see if there’s a stamped code. Schluter stamps most of their profiles with a product code and a height measurement in millimeters. If the stamp is worn off, measure the exposed face height with a ruler and we can usually match it from that. The OEM part is always our first recommendation because the alloy and coating are matched to the system, but for some older Schluter driveway profiles there are quality aftermarket equivalents in aluminum or stainless that we will quote transparently and label as such. The decision should come down to lifespan, not just price, and in the Fresno valley sun, the coating on a cheap profile fails in about three summers.

Signs Your Schluter Driveway & Pavers Part Is Failing
- The edge profile has lifted at one end. This usually means the anchoring leg has lost its bond with the thin-set or mortar bed underneath, often because water has been getting in at the seam and working the piece loose through wet-dry cycles. If it’s lifting more than a few millimeters, the fix is re-anchoring, not glue.
- You can see a rust line or pitting on the visible face. This is coating failure, and in Fresno it’s almost always from sun exposure on a cheaper alloy, or from standing irrigation water that splashes a paver edge two or three times a week. Schluter’s higher-grade profiles resist this far longer, but nothing is permanent outdoors.
- Water is pooling where the driveway meets the pavers. If the gap has widened or the profile has sunk slightly, a drainage profile underneath may have dislodged. The water now sits against the concrete edge and starts undermining the paver base over time, which is exactly how a small piece turns into a three-foot trench repair.
- You hear a hollow, shifting sound when walking certain pavers near the edge. That’s the base settling, and often the profile is just the canary – the real issue is that water got under the pavers because the edge was no longer sealing. We fix the edge, but we also check the base and level while we’re there.
- The profile is still in place but now sits proud of the surface. This is usually movement from the concrete side, not the paver side. Fresno’s clay soil expands and contracts seasonally, and a driveway slab that moves a quarter inch against a fixed metal profile will eventually pull the profile loose or crack the thinnest course of pavers next to it.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In Fresno, a straightforward Schluter profile or edge replacement typically runs $250 to $800, including the part, the anchoring materials, and the labor. If the failure has spread under the pavers and we’re pulling up a section of the base to re-level, expect $1,000 to $2,500 depending on the square footage. A full paver driveway installation is a different scope entirely and runs $7,000 to $18,000 in this market, while a concrete driveway installation sits at $4,500 to $12,000 for comparison. The range on any Schluter replacement comes down to three things: how much of the surrounding surface has to come apart to get at the part, whether the anchoring leg was originally set in thin-set or a mud bed, and whether we’re matching an existing profile or installing a new system line.
Every quote we write is itemized: the part, the materials, the labor, and the time. That written price is fixed before we start. If we uncover something underneath, we stop, we explain what we found, and we give you a written change before anything moves forward. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the work: if the profile or fix isn’t right a year out, we make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
Some things you can safely check yourself: clean the profile face, clear the adjacent drainage gap of leaves and debris, and note whether the piece moves when you press on it. That information helps us quote accurately over the phone. What I’d steer most Fresno homeowners away from is pulling the profile up to “have a look.” Once the anchoring leg is separated from its bed, you’ve likely broken whatever bond was left, and re-setting a half-torn profile without the right thin-set and a dead-flat surface is how you end up with a trip hazard and a second repair in eight months. If the piece is sharp, bent, or moving under foot, that’s a call to (559) 540-8453. We’ll show up, look at it, and write the price down before anything comes off the truck.
FAQs

An OEM Schluter profile properly installed in a Fresno paver application typically lasts 10 to 20 years, though the visible finish may dull sooner from sun and irrigation water. A cheaper aftermarket alloy in the same spot often fails in 3 to 6 years, which is why we quote the OEM part first unless there’s a specific reason not to. Call (559) 540-8453 and we’ll help you figure out what the part you have now actually is.
Sometimes. A profile that is lifting but not bent or kinked can often be re-anchored in place with the right thin-set and a proper clean-out of the old bed, usually for the low end of the replacement range. If the metal has bent, kinked, or sheared, the part needs replacement because the geometry will never sit flush again. We’ll tell you straight which one you’re looking at when we see it, and the quote reflects the actual fix, not the worst case.
Most single-profile replacement jobs take 2 to 4 hours on site, including the clean-up and the photo we take before the crew leaves so you can see the workspace was left right. If we’re pulling pavers and re-leveling a base, the job usually runs a full day to a day and a half. We schedule around your family’s rhythm where we can: quiet tools during nap and school hours, drop cloths at the door, and shoe covers every visit.
We keep the common Schluter edge profiles and drainage parts in the truck because we use them often enough that it doesn’t make sense to make you wait for a shipment. Uncommon sizes and specific finishes are special-ordered, and we’ll tell you the lead time before you commit to anything. We also work with KraftMaid cabinetry, Cambria, and Silestone products on the remodeling side, and we treat your Schluter part with the same level of detail: measure it, match it, write the price, do the work, stand behind it.
If you’ve got a Schluter driveway or paver part that’s failing, call (559) 540-8453 for a free estimate. A live person answers, and the price is written down before any work starts.
