Schluter Bathroom Remodeling: The Fresno Owner’s Guide
A Schluter bathroom remodel in Fresno typically runs between $9,000 and $28,000 installed, depending on the size of the wet area, the condition of the subfloor, and which Schluter system components your project needs. We stock Schluter KERDI membrane, KERDI-BOARD, DITRA underlayment, and the matching corners, bands, and drains on the truck, so most repair and replacement work can start without a special-order wait. Most Fresno homeowners discover a Schluter component has failed when they notice cracked grout lines, a soft spot in the tile floor, or water staining on the ceiling below the bathroom.
What you’re dealing with is usually not the Schluter material itself. It’s the installation: a seam that wasn’t bonded with the right thinset, a corner that was cut instead of folded, a drain flange that was never torqued to spec. The good news is these failures are identifiable, repairable, and far less expensive to fix correctly now than to ignore for another season. Tile does not care about your timeline, but we can work around that.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To

Schluter makes a family of waterproofing and uncoupling products, and compatibility matters more than most homeowners expect. KERDI membrane is the flexible sheet membrane used on shower walls and floors; KERDI-BOARD is the rigid foam panel that replaces cement board; DITRA and DITRA-HEAT are the uncoupling membranes used under floor tile. These are not interchangeable. A shower built with KERDI-BOARD needs KERDI-BAND at every seam and KERDI-KERECK at every inside corner, and if a corner was skipped or substituted with a generic product, that’s where water gets through.
Identifying your system is straightforward: look inside the shower valve opening or at any exposed edge. KERDI membrane is bright orange and roughly 8 mils thick. KERDI-BOARD has a gray foam core and an orange face. DITRA has a waffle pattern. If you’re not sure, take a photo of the edge and call us; we can usually identify it over the phone in under two minutes. One Fresno gotcha: houses in the Tower District and other pre-1970 neighborhoods often have plaster walls and uneven framing, which means the Schluter substrate was sometimes forced into place rather than shimmed flat. That’s a compatibility issue with the house, not the product, and it’s the first thing we check. We’re an independent contractor, not affiliated with Schluter, but we install their systems the way the spec sheets say to install them.

Signs Your Schluter Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Soft or flexing tile near the drain. This usually means the bonding layer has broken down underneath the tile, often from standing water or a slow drain leak. In Fresno’s hard water, mineral buildup at the drain flange can eat away at the seal over time.
- Water staining on the ceiling below the bathroom. A dark ring on the downstairs ceiling means water has found a path through the substrate. By the time the stain shows, the leak has been active for weeks, not days.
- Grout cracking along the floor-to-wall transition. The change of plane is where movement happens. If the installer didn’t use KERDI-BAND or KERDI-KERECK at that seam, the grout is the only thing holding back water, and grout is not waterproof.
- Musty smell that returns a day after cleaning. Trapped moisture inside the wall cavity or under the tile bed feeds mildew that surface cleaning can’t reach. This is the smell of water that has nowhere to go.
- Tile popping loose at the perimeter. When the substrate swells or moves, the tile loses its bond. In older Fresno homes with wood subfloors, seasonal humidity shifts make this worse.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A full Schluter shower rebuild in Fresno falls between $9,000 and $28,000. The lower end covers a standard 3×5 shower with KERDI membrane over cement board, a single valve, and a basic tile package. The upper end covers larger walk-in showers with KERDI-BOARD walls, custom niches, bench seating, DITRA-HEAT under the floor tile, and premium tile or slab selections.
What drives the price:
- Whether we’re repairing a section or rebuilding the waterproof envelope from the studs out
- Shower size and whether a tub is being converted
- Which Schluter system components are required and what’s already in place
- Tile selection, plumbing fixture placement, and accessibility features like zero-threshold entries
Every quote we write is a fixed price, in writing, before any work starts. Parts and labor are listed separately so you can see exactly what you’re paying for. And the work carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right, we make it right.

You can safely check a few things yourself: look for visible cracks in grout, press on tile to feel for movement, and check the ceiling below for staining. What you should not do is start removing tile to “take a look” underneath. Waterproofing systems fail in layers, and once you break the surface, you’ve opened the envelope. If the leak is active, you need the wet area contained before more of the subfloor and framing absorbs water.
Working with Schluter products is not inherently dangerous the way high-tension springs or electrical work is, but it is precise. The thinset has to be mixed to the right consistency, applied with the right trowel, and the membrane has to be bedded while the mortar is still wet. A seam that looks fine but isn’t fully bonded will leak for months before anyone notices. If you’ve got a failing Schluter shower, call us at (559) 540-8453. We’ll assess what’s actually wrong, tell you what has to come out and what can stay, and put the price in writing before anything else happens.
FAQs

A properly installed Schluter waterproofing system should last the life of the tile installation, typically 30 to 50 years, in a Fresno climate as long as the tile and grout are maintained and standing water isn’t allowed to pool. The failure point is almost always a seam, a corner, or a drain connection, not the membrane itself. If your shower is failing early, call (559) 540-8453 and we’ll find out where.
Sometimes, yes. If the failure is localized, like a single corner or a drain seal, we can remove the affected tile, patch the Schluter membrane with the correct seam and band materials, and retile the area to match. If water has been traveling under the tile bed for months, the repair may need to extend further. We’ll tell you what we find and give you a written price for the scope that’s actually needed.
A standalone shower rebuild in Fresno typically takes 2 to 3 weeks from demo to grouted and cured. A full bathroom including the floor, vanity, and fixtures runs 4 to 6 weeks depending on tile lead times and plumbing relocation. We keep a project calendar and update it when things change, so you’re not guessing when the crew shows up.
We keep KERDI membrane, KERDI-BAND, KERDI-KERECK preformed corners, DITRA, DITRA-HEAT cable, and KERDI drains stocked on the truck in standard sizes. If your project needs a non-standard size or a specialty component, we can usually have it from our supplier within two to three business days. Call (559) 540-8453 during your free estimate and we’ll confirm what’s on the truck before we arrive.
