James Hardie Driveway & Pavers: The Fresno Owner’s Guide
If you have a James Hardie driveway or paver system in Fresno and a section has cracked, shifted, or begun to fail, we can match the replacement piece and have it installed for you. Typical paver driveway replacement in Fresno runs $7,000 – $18,000 for a full install, while smaller section repairs and paver swaps fall well below that depending on square footage and what’s underneath. Most owners notice the problem the same way: a paver that rocks underfoot, a low spot that holds water after a Fresno rain, or a crack that follows the line of the old expansion joint.
We’re Elmstead Remodeling Fresno, led by Graham Stein, and we’re an independent contractor, not affiliated with James Hardie. We work with James Hardie exterior products and have spent enough time in Fresno’s older neighborhoods to know how our clay soil and summer heat treat anything set on the ground. The written price comes before any work starts, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the finished job.
Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

James Hardie’s exterior product line includes fiber cement siding, trim, and backer board. Driveway and paver systems that carry the James Hardie name are typically fiber cement paver products or paver systems paired with HardieBacker underlayment for adjacent walkways and driveway aprons. The key thing to check before ordering any replacement part is the product code printed on the original packaging or the underside of the paver itself. Fiber cement pavers come in specific thicknesses, usually 1/2 inch or 5/8 inch, and the thickness determines what substrate the paver can sit on without cracking.
For Fresno specifically, we tell customers to check two things. First, measure the paver thickness with a tape measure. Second, look for the mill number stamped on a corner of any leftover paver. Those two pieces of information get you to the correct part faster than a brand name alone. If you’re choosing between an OEM James Hardie piece and a quality aftermarket equivalent, the aftermarket fiber cement paver is often identical in composition and dimension, but the color may sit a half-shade off from the surrounding pieces. Fresno’s sun bleaches everything, so a new paver next to a five-year-old paver will look brighter for a season. That’s not a defect, it’s weather.

Signs Your James Hardie Driveway & Pavers Are Failing
- A paver rocks when you step on it. The sand bed or base underneath has eroded or settled. In Fresno’s older neighborhoods like Sunnyside or the Tower District, we see this a lot where irrigation overspray has worked its way under the driveway edge.
- Water pools in one spot after rain. The base has settled unevenly and the pavers have followed. Standing water on fiber cement pavers speeds up surface wear and invites cracking at the edges during winter temperature swings.
- A crack runs in a straight line across several pavers. That line usually points to a settlement seam or an old expansion joint. Patching each paver individually won’t fix it; the base under that seam has to be compacted again.
- Edges are chipping along the driveway border. Tires, bicycles, or a garbage bin dragged at the wrong angle will take the corner off a fiber cement paver. Once the edge goes, water gets under it and the damage spreads laterally.
- Efflorescence or white chalky bloom appears. This is mineral salt working its way out of the fiber cement. It’s cosmetic and cleanable, but in Fresno it usually means moisture is trapped underneath with no drainage path because the base wasn’t sloped properly at install.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a section repair where we’re pulling a few failed pavers, recompacting the base, and setting new pieces with fresh sand, Fresno pricing generally lands between $250 and $700 for smaller areas. A paver patio installation runs $3,500 – $11,000, and a full paver driveway installation in Fresno is $7,000 – $18,000. What drives the range is square footage, paver thickness, whether the existing base is salvageable, and whether we need to cut pieces around curves or planter beds.
Every quote includes the parts, the labor, the base material, and the clean-up. We bring shoe covers and drop cloths even on outdoor work because the crew walks through the house to get to the backyard. The written price we hand you before we start is the price you pay. No add-on, no change order surprise. If we uncover a problem with the base that we couldn’t see from above, we’ll stop, show you what we found, and write down the adjustment before anything else gets touched. That’s a Graham Stein rule: write it down before anything comes off the truck.

What you can safely do is clean the paver surface, check for rocking pieces, and mark low spots with a little chalk after rain. What we don’t recommend you do yourself is pull a paver up and start digging. Fiber cement pavers are heavy, and the base underneath carries the weight of every vehicle that drives over it. If the base was laid wrong or the drainage slope is off, replacing the paver on top only puts a Band-Aid over a structural problem. The wrong fix here means the next crack shows up in six months, and now you’ve paid twice.
If you’d rather have it done once, call us at (559) 540-8453 and we’ll come look at it together. Graham will walk the driveway with you, notebook in hand, and write down exactly what he sees. The estimate is free.
FAQs

Fiber cement pavers on a properly compacted base typically last 15 to 25 years in Fresno’s climate. The sun fades color and the clay soil moves with moisture, so the base matters more than the paver itself. Call (559) 540-8453 to have us check yours.
A hairline crack can sometimes be stabilized, but once a fiber cement paver has cracked through or lost an edge, replacement is the honest fix. We’ll tell you which is which and quote only what’s needed. Call (559) 540-8453 for a straight answer.
Most section repairs in Fresno take one day from start to finish. That includes pulling the failed pieces, fixing the base, setting new pavers, and sweeping sand into the joints. Call (559) 540-8453 and we’ll put it on the calendar.
We keep common paver sizes in our Fresno inventory and order the rest through our James Hardie supplier. If you can tell us the thickness and mill number, we can often match it the same week. Call (559) 540-8453 with a photo of the failed piece and we’ll get moving.
