Belgard Home Additions & ADU: The Fresno Owner’s Guide
If you already own a Belgard paver patio, driveway, or retaining wall in Fresno and you’re planning to build on top of it, or if you’re pricing a full Belgard hardscape package as part of a home addition or ADU project, the installed cost in Fresno typically runs $45,000 to $130,000 for the addition itself, with pavers and site prep adding $3,500 to $18,000 depending on square footage. We stock and install Belgard-compatible pavers, edge restraints, joint sand, and base materials, and we can usually start the hardscape portion within two to three weeks of a signed scope. Most Fresno homeowners discover their existing Belgard surface is failing when they notice pavers shifting near the foundation, sand washing out at the edges after a storm, or pooling water that was not there the first year. That is usually the moment they call us and ask whether the original base was built right.
Elmstead Remodeling Fresno is an independent contractor, not affiliated with Belgard. We install Belgard because it is a named product with published specs, and because homeowners can look up those specs themselves instead of taking our word for it.
Which Belgard Models This Applies To

Belgard’s hardscape lines are split by application, and the compatibility question matters when you’re tying a new addition or ADU into an existing outdoor surface. The Cambridge, Catalina, and Mega-Arbel lines are what we most often see under Fresno patios and driveways. The pavers are modular, but they are not interchangeable across all series: a Catalina paver is 2-3/8 inches thick and built for pedestrian loads, while a Mega-Arbel paver runs 3-1/8 inches thick and is rated for vehicles. If someone built your patio with Catalina and you now want to extend it as a driveway approach because the ADU added a new parking space, that is the wrong paver for the load, and this is a compatibility gotcha worth knowing before you buy anything.
For home additions and ADU work, the Belgard product that comes up most often is the retaining wall block line, particularly the Dublin and Melville systems. What fails first is rarely the block itself. It is the base material under it or the edge restraint around it. Fresno’s soil is a heavy clay-silt mix that swells in winter and cracks in summer, and a base that was originally two inches of sand over native soil cannot hold up to a 110-degree August followed by a wet January. We spec four to six inches of compacted Class II road base under pavers in Fresno, and for any wall over three feet we check the engineering requirements before we write the scope. That is the difference between seeing what’s wrong and guessing what’s wrong.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question for Belgard specifically: edge restraints and geogrid are commodity items where a quality aftermarket equivalent from a supplier like NDS or Tensar works as well as anything branded. Pavers themselves we buy from Belgard’s regional Fresno distributor so the dye lots match on a repair. Polymer sand we use Alliance G2 or Techniseal, whichever the distributor has in stock, because the cheap bagged stuff at the big-box store turns to dust in one Fresno summer.

Signs Your Belgard Home Additions & ADU Surface Is Failing
- Pavers rocking underfoot near the foundation or doorway. This means the base has lost compaction, usually from water getting underneath. Left alone, the rocking spreads outward from the soft spot and the surface starts to look wavy.
- Joint sand washing out after every rain. Fresno’s winter storms are short but hard, and if the water runs across the paver field instead of away from it, it pulls the sand with it. Without joint sand, the pavers start shifting sideways and the edges open up.
- A tree root lifting pavers in a straight line. This follows the root path, and it means the original install either cut the root poorly or did not install a root barrier. The fix is lifting the affected section, pruning the root back correctly, and reinstalling with a barrier.
- Water pooling against the new addition’s foundation or an ADU’s stem wall. This is the one we treat most seriously, because standing water against a foundation in Fresno’s clay creates expansion pressure and invites moisture intrusion. The fix is a regrade plus possibly a channel drain.
- Edge pavers falling away at the perimeter. That tells us the edge restraint was either omitted or not spiked properly. The perimeter is the ring that holds the whole field together, and once it lets go, every paver is slowly working toward the outside.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For a Belgard hardscape repair or extension tied to a Fresno home addition or ADU, expect $3,500 to $11,000 for a paver patio replacement, $7,000 to $18,000 for a paver driveway, and $45,000 to $130,000 for the home addition itself. An ADU build runs $90,000 to $220,000, and that range is driven by whether you are converting an existing garage (starting around $30,000) or building a detached unit from the ground up. You get a written price before any work starts, on every project. Not a range in an email. A line-item scope with a number at the bottom, and that number does not move unless you change the scope and sign off on the change.
Our Belgard work comes with shoe covers and drop cloths inside the house on every visit, a photo of the clean-up before the crew leaves, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the surface we installed is not right after the job is complete, we make it right. That promise covers every completed project, and it is written into the scope, not mentioned after the check clears.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things before you call: run a hose on the surface and watch where the water goes, measure the gap between pavers with a quarter, and look at whether the edge restraint is visible or buried. That tells you a lot about what is happening under the surface. Rebuilding the base is where DIY goes sideways, because the compaction and drainage work is not visible once the pavers are laid back down, and a paver job that looks fine from the top can be failing underneath within a year. There is also the material math: if you order pavers yourself and miss the dye lot, you’ll have a two-tone surface that no amount of sealant fixes.
Graham Stein has been doing this work for going on twenty-six years, and he will tell you the same thing he tells every homeowner: if you are not sure what is under your pavers, we can find out in one visit. Our phones are answered by a live person 24/7, so you won’t leave a message and wonder if anyone heard it. Call (559) 540-8453 and we’ll schedule the free estimate.
FAQs

A properly built Belgard surface in Fresno lasts 20 to 30 years, with the caveat that the base matters more than the paver. The paver itself is concrete; it will outlast the base. Fresno’s clay-silt soil and summer heat cycles mean the base needs four to six inches of compacted Class II road base and proper drainage from day one.
Yes, in many cases. If the pavers themselves are not cracked or chipped, we lift the affected section, repair or replace the base, rebuild the edge restraint, and relay the same pavers. If the dye lot on a partial replacement won’t match, we blend from the new section backward so the patch does not look like a patch.
A paver patio repair or replacement usually takes two to four days. A full driveway with base work runs four to six days. Any work tied to a home addition or ADU follows the construction schedule, and Graham keeps a project calendar that he actually updates when something changes.
We order Belgard pavers from their Fresno distributor on a per-project basis so the dye lots match, and we keep edge restraints, geogrid, and joint sand on hand for repairs. We can usually have materials on site within five to seven business days of a signed scope. Call (559) 540-8453 for an exact timeline and a written quote. Estimates are free.
