Sterling Driveway & Pavers: The Fresno Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Sterling-compatible driveway paver systems and replacement parts throughout Fresno, with typical installed pricing between $7,000 and $18,000 depending on driveway size and paver line. Most Sterling paver repairs, from edge-restraint failures to individual paver swaps, can be handled in a single visit once we’ve matched the part to your existing layout.
How most Fresno homeowners discover the problem: a paver shifts under a car tire and you hear that hollow thunk. Or the edge restraint along the curb gives way after a few hard summers, and the border pavers start to wander. Sometimes it’s a low spot that pools water by the garage for days after rain. Sterling systems are built to last in California, but our clay-heavy Fresno soils, long dry spells, and the sudden winter downpours put real stress on the base layers beneath those pavers. When the base shifts, the part fails. Usually it’s not the paver itself. It’s what’s holding it.
Which Sterling Models This Applies To

Sterling’s driveway paver lines break down into three families we see most often in Fresno: the Holland stone series (rectangular, interlocking, the workhorse of most residential driveways), the Aqua-Bric permeable line (common in newer Fresno subdivisions where stormwater rules require pervious surfaces), and the Plaza/Cambridge slab lines (larger format, used for walkways that tie into driveways). Each line has its own joint width, paver thickness, and edge profile, and they do not interchange.
The compatibility gotcha most owners hit: Sterling manufactures both a 60mm paver for residential driveways and an 80mm version for heavier commercial or RV loads. Pull a paver and measure the thickness. If you have the 60mm and we bring the 80mm to patch a section, the patch sits proud and never settles right. The model stamp is usually on the underside of the paver, and the batch code tells us the color lot. Color is the second gotcha. Sterling color lots shift subtly year to year, and Fresno’s UV exposure fades surface pigment faster than owners expect. We order from current lots when patching and blend from adjacent pavers when we can pull a few and rotate them.
On OEM versus aftermarket: for driveway pavers, there is no meaningful quality penalty in using a reputable aftermarket equivalent for replacement units, provided the thickness, chamfer, and joint profile match. What we do not do is mix a smooth-finished aftermarket paver into a tumbled Sterling layout and pretend it looks the same. It will read as a patch from the street. When an exact visual match matters, we order Sterling OEM through our supplier network and schedule the work once the lot has arrived.

Signs Your Sterling Driveway & Pavers Are Failing
- Paver rock or “thunk” under tire load. The base layer beneath has developed a void, usually from water eroding the sand or a low spot in the subgrade. The paver itself is fine. The support under it is gone. Left alone, the surrounding pavers follow.
- Edge restraint pulling away from the border row. Fresno’s thermal swings expand and contract the paver field more than owners expect. When the plastic or aluminum edge restraint works loose from the spikes, the border pavers drift out and the whole field slowly spreads toward the lawn.
- Low spot that holds water more than 48 hours. This is the symptom that matters most in Fresno. Our winter storms drop a lot of water fast, and clay soil drains slowly. A low spot means water is getting under the pavers, and every cycle weakens the base material. Over a few seasons, that section will settle visibly.
- Joint sand washing out heavily after rain. Some joint sand loss is normal. If you see channels and bare paver edges after every storm, the sand has no binding agent or the drainage slope is off. The pavers begin to move laterally without sand locking them in place.
- White efflorescence spreading across multiple pavers. On its own this is cosmetic, a salt bloom from moisture moving through the paver. But widespread efflorescence in Fresno often points to trapped moisture under the field, which means a drainage problem is already underway and will eventually undermine the base.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For a full Sterling driveway paver installation in Fresno, expect $7,000 to $18,000 depending on square footage, paver line, and whether we’re rebuilding a failing base or starting fresh. Partial repairs, like resetting an edge or patching a settled section, run lower and are quoted by the linear foot or the section. Every quote is written, line by line, before any work starts. You will see the paver cost, base material, sand, edge restraint, and labor separated on the page. No allowances that grow later.
The range exists because of three things. First, the base condition. If the original driveway failed from a weak subgrade, excavating and rebuilding it properly is the only fix that lasts, and that costs more than a surface refresh. Second, the Sterling line. Aqua-Bric permeable systems cost more per square foot than Holland stone because the open-graded base and jointing material are more expensive. Third, access. A driveway with tight side yards, gates, or mature tree roots limiting excavation takes longer.
Every Sterling paver installation or repair we complete is covered under our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If it is not done right, we make it right. We also leave you a photo of the clean-up before the crew leaves, because the end of a driveway job should look like the crew cared about the rest of your property too.
DIY or Call Us?
There are things a Fresno homeowner can safely check on a Sterling driveway. Walk the field after rain and mark where water pools. Look at the edge restraint and see if the spikes are still seated. Pull one obvious loose paver and check whether the base under it has eroded. Those observations help us price the job accurately when we arrive.
What is harder than it looks: re-compacting a base layer, re-grading for proper drainage, getting the joint sand density right, and matching color lots. Do it wrong and the patch fails inside a year, and then you have paid twice. Driveway pavers are heavy. Moving and relaying them is physical, repetitive work, and a bad lift on a 60mm paver can hurt your back long after the job is done. If the damage is more than a few loose pavers or a pulled edge, call us at (559) 540-8453. We will come look, take measurements, and hand you a written price before anything comes off the truck.
FAQs

A properly installed Sterling paver driveway in Fresno lasts 25 to 40 years at the paver surface level, with sand rejointing every 5 to 8 years as normal upkeep. The pavers themselves are concrete units built to handle decades of UV and weather; what fails first is almost always the base or the edge restraint, not the paver. Call (559) 540-8453 to schedule a look at your base condition before any repair.
Yes, in most cases a Sterling driveway can be repaired, not replaced. Sectional repairs, edge resets, sand rejointing, and single-paver swaps fix the majority of failures we see in Fresno. Full replacement is only warranted when the base is so undermined that patching would leave you chasing new settlements every winter. Call (559) 540-8453 and we will walk the driveway with you and tell you honestly which path makes sense.
Most sectional repairs and edge resets on a Sterling driveway in Fresno finish in one day. Larger base rebuilds may run two to three days depending on excavation and access. We give you a schedule in writing before work starts, and my notebook stays open during the job, so details you mention mid-project don’t get lost by Friday.
We keep common edge restraints, joint sand, base material, and a selection of standard Holland stone pavers on hand in our Fresno inventory. Specific Sterling color lots and the 80mm heavy-load pavers are special ordered through our supplier, and we schedule the installation around their arrival so the job goes in one trip. The other brands we stock parts for alongside Sterling include KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone, so if a mixed-material project comes up we can coordinate it without multiple contractors.
